Error: When Logging into Your Windows Server your Desktop Icons Do Not Load and You are Stuck at a Blue Screen
Problem:
This has been predominately seen on Windows 2008 R2 servers. It takes place when a user attempts to remote into their server via Remote Desktop. The remote session is established and the user sees the server say “Applying Computer Settings” but afterwards are left at the same blue screen without any text displayed. The user can still minimize or disconnect their session via the Remote Desktop session bar at the top of the screen. Even if the user disconnects and retries remoting in they get the same blank blue login screen.
Based on the immediate occurrence of this error it seems it may be the result of a Windows update.
Fix:
Log into your Windows server as an Administrative user account.
Open Administrative Tools > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Services Manager.
Alternatively you can open Task Manager and select the Users tab.
Right-click the user getting the blank blue login screen and click Log Off.
Log the same user back in from their workstation. They should be able to log in.
